Companion to the Manuale

The Manual contains a variety of offices.  Some of its contents are duplicated in the Breviary, some in the Processional, and some in the Missal; and some content is proper to the Manual. The most important elements of the Manual are the the rites of baptism, marriage, extreme unction, commendation and vigils of the dead, and burial.

“No book would be more closely associated with the life of the people that the Manual, connected as it was with the gravest issues and deepest feelings of human life.  It would be present, in use, at the christening of the parishioner when a child, at the great event of the wedding, and at the last solemn scene at the graveside.” Henry Littlehales, in Wordsworth and Littlehales, The Old Service-Books of the English Church (London: Methuen, 1904):214.

The principal source for this edition is the 1506 edition by Pynson.  To that has been added all the notes and variants provided in W. G. Henderson, ed., Manuale et Processionale ad usum insignis ecclesiae Eboracensis. (Surtees Society, 1875, R 1882), Appendix I: Manuale ad usum insignis ecclesie Sarum.  Music has been supplied where needed from the Sarum Breviary, Missal, and Processional.  Relevant information and references found in A. Jeffries Collins, ed., Manuale ad usum preceleribus ecclesie Sarisburiensis. (Henry Bradshaw Society, 1960), has been included.  Additional sources consulted are the Sarum Manuals of 1516, 1529, and 1554.

A detailed list of printed Sarum Manuals appears in Wordsworth, Ceremonies and Processions of the Cathedral Church of Salisbury (Cambridge, Cambridge University Press:1901):333-336.

Rubrics for the processions are based variously on the Consuetudinary, the Old Ordinal, and the New Ordinal.  See Manuale (1960), footnotes, for details.

The Sarum Manual survived into Jacobean times in two books published on the continent: Sacra Institutio Baptizandi . . . juxta usum insignis Ecclesie Sarisburiensis (Douai, 1604), and Manuale Sacerdotum . . . juxta usum insignis Ecclesie Sarisburiensis (Douai, 1610-11).  Text variants from these books appear in Manuale (1960) under the letter D.

Readers may wish to consult Rev. Duncan MacGregor, The Rathen Manual (Aberdeen: Aberdeen Ecclesiological Society, 1905), a manuscript Scottish Manual after the Use of Sarum, which includes an English translation.

The enclosure of anchorites

See E. A. Jones, ‘Rites of Enclosure :The English Ordines for the Enclosing of Anchorites, S. XII-S.XVI.’ Traditio LXVII (2012):154-234.  This study focusses on the rites found in manuscript pontificals.

See also Ralph Barnes ed. Liber Pontificalis of Edmund Lacy, Bishop of Exeter.  Exeter, 1847:131-137

The presence of what is properly a pontifical rite in the Manual is surprising.  However, on the one hand, the bishop could deputize a priest to perorm the rite, and further, the enclosure was frequently at a parish church rather than at a cathedral.

Commendation of Souls
This office, also found in the Breviary, is not the same as the Commendation of the Soul at the Point of Death, (213) or the Commendation of the Soul immediately after death (219).  Rather, this Commendation is the equivalent of the little hours of the Office (Vigils) of the Dead.  The divisions of the psalm reflect its division into four parts for use at the hours of prime, terce, sext, and none.

Articles of excommunication
The ‘Articuli generales majoris excommunicationis’ and the ‘Modus absolvendi’ do not appear in Manuals after 1533-34.  They gave offense to Henry VIII. (Manuale 1960:166, note.)

An overview of excommunication in medieval England appears in Rosalind Hill, ‘The Theory and Practice of Excommunication in Medieval England’, History XLII, No. 144 (1957): 1-11.  See also Leo Carruthers, ‘The Great Curse: Excommunication, Canon Law and the Judicial System in Late Medieval society, Through the Eyes of an English Preacher.’, Caliban XXIX (2011):45-60.

Good men and women it is ordained

Arthur Brandeis, ed. Jacob’s Well: And English Treatise on the Cleansing of Man’s Conscience (Salisbury Cathedral MS. 103, ca. 1440) (London:Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., 1900): 13 ff. is a more or less parallel but more extensive text.

352

357
Blessings of bishops and suffragans
‘According to The Old Service Books, p. 216, these blessings were introduced into the Manual, to which they do not strictly belong, because “it was not found worth while to go to the expense of printing the Pontifical for the use of Bishops”.  Maskell (Mon. Rit., i. pp. cccvi-cccviii) argues, however, that many could have been “performed by priests under special license and authority”.’, Manual 1960:166, note.
